Child Passenger Safety week and Amazon gift card giveaway

I'm excited to be joining up with Bloggin' Mamas for a really important cause today - Child Passenger Safety week.  This is timely information to me as we're just starting to look at transitioning Oliver to a new carseat.

Did you know that motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death for children age 1 to 13 in the USA? The fatality rate could be reduced by about half if the correct child safety seat were always used.

  #TheRightSeat

Bloggin' Mamas is supporting the Ad Council and The Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) by sharing the word about Child Passenger Safety Week this week (September 14-20). One of the goals of Child Passenger Safety Week is to encourage parents and caregivers to visit SaferCar.gov/TheRightSeat to determine if their child is in the right seat for his or her age and size and to locate a car seat check event in their area. Additionally, parents and caregivers should be sure to register their child’s car seat with the manufacturer so as to be informed in the event of a recall. Safety seats, if used correctly, dramatically reduce the risk of fatality or injury to children. However, research shows that three out of every four car seats are not used correctly, meaning the child is not in the correct car seat for their age, height and weight, or the car seat is not installed correctly. In 2012, over one third (37%) of children killed in car crashes were not in car seats or wearing seat belts.

Resources

- Installation Resources: If a car seat is not installed correctly, your child's safety could be in danger. Every car seat has different installation instructions. You can find resources and tips here to help you get “the right fit” on your car seats: http://www.safercar.gov/parents/RightFit.htm
- Free Car Seat Checks: During Child Passenger Safety Week, there will be more than 600 events in 45 states across the country, where certified child passenger safety technicians will inspect car seats and show parents and caregivers how to correctly install and use them. In most cases, this service is free of charge. Locate a car seat check event here: http://www.safercar.gov/cpsApp/cps/index.htm?

  Car Seat Safety Tips:
  • Find a car seat that fits your child. As children grow, how they sit in your car will change. Make sure the car seat you purchase is designed to fit your child’s current size and age.
  • Not all car seats fit in all vehicles so test the car seat you plan to buy to make sure it fits well in your vehicle.
  • Before putting your child in a car seat, read the manufacturer’s instructions so you know how your car seat works.
  • All-in-One car seats offer you the advantage of using the same seat for the following positions: rear-facing, forward-facing with harness, then booster. These seats typically have higher height and weight limits for the rear-facing position, allowing you to keep your child rear-facing for a longer period of time.
  • Remember, the best car seat is the one that fits your child properly, is easy to use, and fits in your vehicle correctly. The information here can help you choose the right seat for your child. Keep in mind that: - Your child under age 1 should always ride in a rear-facing car seat. - Children ages 1-3 should be kept rear-facing as long as possible.- Keep your child in the back seat at least through age 12. Be certain you've installed your car seat correctly by having it checked at an inspection station or by a certified child passenger safety technician. Bring the Car Seat Instructions AND the Vehicle Owner’s Manual with you to a seat check appointment!
Check out this Infograph to help you check if you have #TheRightSeat and join @NHTSAgov on 9/17/14 from 3p-4p EST for a Twitter Chat where you can ask questions you might have about your car seat.

Hello sunshine!!!

Well once again, I didn't have to report for my Jury Duty.  I found out I won't have to report tomorrow either, so that's a good thing too!  And there is finally SUNSHINE!  Not hazy fake through the high clouds sun.  Real, live, beautiful sun and beautiful blue skies with only a few white puffy clouds.  And it's not blasted hot or anything.  If I could bottle today and keep it for the entire summer, I totally would!

This shirt I thrifted from the regular clothes over at Unique Thrift Store last month.  It hasn't been nice enough to wear it yet, it's sleeveless, but I decided to throw on a cardi with it today and figured it would work great. I love how blousey it is, I know it'll be a fine shirt this summer even if it isn't a maternity top.  And I can't get enough of this color right now - aqua, teal, mint, anything that shade is a total win!

Shirt - thrifted
Cardi - Arizona Jean Co, JCPenney
Pants - Anthropologie, thrifted
Necklace and earrings - Camy Couture via giveaway
Bag - Lulu's
Sandals - Mootsie Tootsie, from cousin

And of course I am loving that I can still squeeze into my favorite Anthro pants - and button them!  I'll keep wearing them with a belly band even after I can't button them anymore because they are my favorite pants ever!

Hope you all have wonderful days and that the sun is shining where you are too!

Love is love

After how cold it has been this spring, you will not hear me complain for one second that it's suddenly shooting up to 90 F today!  It's only supposed to last through today and it won't be humid, so I can actually take it.  It sounds kind of nice in fact!  Bring it.

A warm day is a perfect excuse to wear the second item I picked up at the Tandem Vintage sale, this adorable dress.  And hey, it's purple, so I can wear it to show pride in honor of Minnesota becoming the 12th state to legalize gay marriage!  Yesterday was such an exciting day.  I have so many friends who will now be able to marry whomever they choose, if they so choose and to me that is a beautiful thing.  Love is love.

Dress - Tandem Vintage
Sweater - F21
Necklace and bracelet - Camy Couture via giveaway
Sandals - Impo, from cousin

I tried the sweater buttoned too, but in the end like the flowy-ness of having it open.  I figured I'd still show both pictures though!  Now if I could only be out enjoying this instant summer instead of stuck at work all day.  Oh well, a girl can dream.

Minty goodness

Introducing....my mint pants!  I am so insanely excited to have these I can't stand it.  And I found a cute polka dot sweater that matched, so you just can't beat it!  I crossed two items off my wish list with one blow this weekend!  It is a little weird to not be wearing anything thrifted for once, that is becoming more and more rare for me these days, but I just finally decided if I wanted mint pants, I was going to have to go to a retail store.

Sweater - Old Navy
Pants - JCPenney (JCP Brand)
Necklace - Camy Couture via giveaway
Shoes - Clothes Mentor

And of course it's still not very spring like, but at least I can wear a warm spring like outfit.  I am feeling bad for the weather guys.  They are just the messengers and you can tell they just feel so bad coming on the air and telling us we're going to get another winter storm.  They're grasping at straws "I see signs of spring in the extended forecast."  I don't blame them one bit, in fact, I kind of want to give them a hug and tell them it's going to be all right.

Anyway, back to these new items, I see so much potential for both the pants and the sweater, I think they'll be my new favorite things.  I'll be able to roll the pants when it finally does get warm, so that's a bonus in my book too!  Hope the rest of you are enjoying spring for us poor MN folks who can't quite yet!

Just call me Pollyanna

Hey everyone!  I am not going to talk about the awful MN weather today.  Nothing I can do about it, so I am instead making the most of my day with another Pinspired outfit.  I found this pin off of Heather from Style Journey's Pin boards - I swear sometimes her and I are style twins - anyway, I had some items to kind of duplicate this one, so I gave it a go.

I opted for a blue sweater instead of a green one, I could probably wear this outfit again this spring with an actual green sweater instead.  Today I needed the extra warmth, so that is why I chose the blue one.

And hey, why not add a fun summer straw bag even if it's anything but summer like outside.  I love this one I bought at the Tandem Vintage sale, it has tons of room in it and will be awesome this summer for shopping or a beach day.  Today it is just brightening up a wintery day.

Sweater - Lands End
T-shirt - Mossimo, Target
Pants - Athleta (from sis-in-law)
Necklace/earrings - Camy Couture (from giveaway)
Bag - Tandem Vintage

Also giving me some sunshine today?  My fun new jewelry from Jasmine's giveway!  My package from her showed up over the weekend and I'm super excited about the goodies she sent.  Not only did I get this pretty minty colored necklace, but also a fun orange crossbody purse that will be good for a night out and a cute purple bracelet that actually fits my tiny wrist.  Here is a photo of all of the items - I can't wait to play with them more!  Thank you again Jasmine!

So I found a way to add some sunshine to my day.  To make lemonade from lemons.  To look on the bright side.  Just call me Pollyanna!

30-Fun

It's my birthday! I am 31 (30-fun) today!  It's been a nice long weekend of celebrating - maybe a bit too much celebrating, not too much time for relaxing, but I've enjoyed every minute.  Yesterday Mr. Monkey and I spent the whole day together celebrating (his birthday is Monday!) and we had a blast.  This is what I wore to our fancy dinner out.

Shirt - thrifted
Blazer - Calvin Klein, thrifted
Skirt - LOFT
Leggings - Target
Shoes - Mossimo, Target
Purse - won in giveaway

Before our nice dinner out we visited our Science Museum and saw the Tornado Alley Omnitheater show.  It was just a nice day of being together!  Today we're having dinner with my parents and celebrating with them.  Later this week we'll celebrate with Mr. Monkey's family as his dad also has a birthday this week.  The fun doesn't stop in this house!!

Luck of the draw

I'm finally getting around to wearing this vintage skirt I picked up when I went thrifting with Erin. I had it shortened a little bit, but not too much.  I wanted to still give a vintage feel without it feeling matronly.  I think it worked out pretty well.  It was also a good example of "don't pay attention to what the size tag says when thrifting items" because the number is definitely not accurate to what size I'd normally buy, but it's vintage, it fits, I'm not going to complain.

My shoes were in the donate pile but I rescued them at the last minute.  I realized I still had plenty of things to wear them with and they still look fine, so I'd give them another summer.  Anyone else ever do that?

I'm also finally getting around to wearing the seahorse pin I won from Christine's giveaway.  He's tiny, so you can't see him real well, but I promise he's there.  Fun added touch to my sweater.  I tell you, it's so worth it to enter blogger giveaways (and I'm not just saying that because I'm running one right now) - I have won so many things, I almost can't believe my luck.  I will probably never win the lottery now though!

Outfit rundown:
Tank - Mossimo, Target
Skirt - thrifted vintage
Sweater - F21
Shoes - Isaac Mizrahi for Target (old)
Necklace - Butterfly Boutique
Pin - c/o Christine of Future Lint

One Year Anniversary "Beth's Favorite Things" giveaway

You guys.  I've been doing this blog thing for ONE YEAR.  How does a year go by so fast?  It has been a blast.  I've enjoyed every single minute.  Looking back at my earliest posts I can see how far I've come in a year too.  You can go back in the archive if you want, the earliest posts are not good - my photos were awful and my formatting wasn't so great, so I'm not going to highlight them, but it is fun to see how I've definitely improved.  When I set out to do this, I had no idea where it would go or what it would become, but I'm proud of what I've done here.  Most of all, the reason I've stuck with it and the reason I have so much fun is because of ALL OF YOU.  Those of you who take the time to read my rambles, share your thoughts, and say hello.  I love this blogging community, I've made some wonderful friends and have been blessed to meet some of you in person and I hope I can meet more of you in person sometime too. Whether near or far, you are all such gifts to me.

So as a gift to all of you, I'm doing a "Beth's Favorite Things" giveaway - think like Oprah - I wish I could give away ALL of my favorite things and I wish I could give them to each and every one of you, but until I have my own talk show like Oprah or win the lottery, sadly I can only give a few things away to one grand prize winner.  First off - here is the loot:

1. Vintage handbag from the fabulous Salvaged Strawberry (visit her Etsy shop here)
2. Megan Mae Buttonflowers in my latest favorite colors of oranges and reds (visit Megan here)
3. Necklace, earrings and bracelet from Target in fun summer colors
4. Burt's Bees Lipbalm
5. I Love Shopping notebook
6. Coffee mug

Above is a closer shot of the bag.  Ignore the playing cards to the right, they are not part of the deal, though I do love cards!  Anyway, this lovely bag will be a great added touch to any summer outfit!  Below are close ups of the jewelry and buttonflowers.

I feel this encompasses many of the things I love - purses, jewelry, accessories, bloggers I enjoy,  coffee, etc.  I hope that you all will love them too.  I did pay for all of these items out of my own pocket and I link because I love.

So how do you enter to win?  Simple.  Please leave me a comment with your email address and let me know  that you follow via Google Friend Connect or Bloglovin.  That's it.  Easy peasy lemon squeezy.  Yes I appreciate my Twitter and FB followers too, but I'm keeping this bad boy simple.  And yes, international readers can enter.  I will figure it out if you win, no worries.

I'll accept entries from today, June 15th through 5pm CST Friday June 22nd.  Winner will be chosen in a video blog and I'll be joined by a special guest!

And again - Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU for your love and support over the last year, I hug you all times a thousand.  I hope you'll stick with me in the future as well!
